With the recent
passing of Coachella, many of our instagram feeds were full of A list celebs
displaying the latest fashions while partying it up in the desert. It seemed
like I couldn’t go on social media one day with out seeing celebrities dressed
like hippies. To no surprise, Vanessa Hudgens or "the Queen of
Coachella" made an appearance as well as the Jenners, Drake, and numerous
Victoria’s Secret models. Coachella is a place where celebs go to be seen and there
is no doubt that Coachella is just as much about fashion and photo opps as it
is about music.
Here are some popular photos from the festival that I’m
sure many of us have already seen. #Coachella
I can see how coachella may be labeled a fashion hub and destination to find models, celebrities and attendees trying to capitalize and sport upcoming trends. I don't think the rest of the world and various cities are able to connect and resonate with the fashion sported at coachella. I recall fringe shorts and loose tank tops hitting topman and other trendy young adult fashion stores in Chicago while it was snowing in March. I never saw anyone wearing indian appropriated shorts outside of coachella as well. I think this does present an opportunity to try something different and join the bandwagon of people hiding their identities with colored hair, sunglasses and other decadent guise.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you guys are saying that Coachella provides celebrities with space to experiment with fashion, but I also think that it's a way for them to re-solidify themselves as true A-list celebrities. I like what you said, Madison, about how Coachella has become very much about the photos. I don't know if celebrities go to Coachella only with the purpose of enjoying the festival, but it seems very much like a major publicity opportunity. With so many eyes around the world turned to the festival, to be one of the celebrities featured in the best dressed lists or the posts about what celebrities wore for Coachella, definitely boosts ones stardom! I think it’s a brilliant way for celebrities to make a statement about where they stand and to keep them in the public eye.
ReplyDeleteI feel as if Coachella has become a giant hub for cultural appropriation and probably not in the best way possible. Fashion trends like headpieces, bindi jewelry, and certain hairstyles have all come to become blatantly okay as long as it's a decorative way to attend a music festival. I know of a lot of celebrities who are guilty of cultural appropriation at Coachella, most specifically the queen of Coachella herself, Vanessa Hudgens, who received major flack in 2014 for her fashion accessory of a Native American headpiece. I know a lot of fashion companies hop on the bandwagon of "festival season" and up their stock with fringe, crop tops, and anything particularly trendy to the festival scene but this only continues to pave the path for further inappropriate forms of cultural appropriation.
