The new release Beauty and The Beast is twirling to 174 million box office this weekend, skyrocketing to the second place in 2017 only next to Logan. They used so much money on stars, construction, costumes, and CGI to remake the original animation, but there is almost no creative adaptation for the new audience but just the exact same old story. Gaston remained a rough, masculine, and sexist hunter who seeks to have Belle as his trophy wife. Belle is still the smart girl in town who reads all the time. The Beast / Prince gains back his humanity and compassion after falling in love with Belle.
Although Belle is still not a complex and powerful heroine character comparing to Moana and Frozen, she is not a princess waiting for the prince to save her anymore, like in the earlier Disney originals Snow White and Cinderella. She is a ordinary girl who eventually saves the prince. However when it comes to physical fight it is still between the beast and Gaston, and all Belle has to do is to kiss him.. For the male characters, the beast who respects Belle's love for reading is portrayed as the good guy and the rough hunter who says women don't have to read is the antagonist, so that is a big step from the prince saving the princess as well. Plus Emma Watson is a feminist advocator, who seems to suit the character.
